Wow, I really did not expect to love Booksmart as much as I did. When I see all of those ditzy teen romantic comedies on netflix and how monotonously stale they are, I begin to think the genre is dead and buried. Booksmart, instead of attempting to reinvent the genre, plays into it perfectly, but the difference here is the passion for filmmaking, thoughtful and potent writing, incredibly strong characters and witty humor. Hitchcock’s film is as beautifully crafted as the rest of his, but no amount of wise direction and production can overshadow how moronically unconvincing the final product is. It’s visually fantastic, especially for the time, but if a film identical in situation and writing were released today, those flaws wouldn’t be glossed over the same.
