The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time ★★

There’s an admittedly attractive mythical quality to this epic, ensemble-driven American parable about the sins of our past dictating an endless cycle of violence. Unfortunately, a lot of its dramatic potential gets shrouded in muddy, aimless storytelling. Plays at times like a sweaty Southern gothic take on Magnolia but without any of that film’s interesting characters, dialogue, and depth. All the men are either gaslighting assholes or violent sociopathic killers (or both), all the women are either sexual tokens or hapless victims bereft of agency (or both). A cast this great doesn’t deserve material this stale and miserable. However, I gotta give props to Robert Pattinson for hamming it the fuck up with that accent.
