Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★★½

I started rewatching season one of Veronica Mars a few weeks ago, and I'm convinced it's the spiritual sister to Promising Young Woman.

A young woman's best friend tragically dies after being sexually abused. In the wake of her death, she changes her personality, leaves her previous friend group, and builds an emotional wall around herself. She's driven by an intense impulse to find justice for her friend's death, despite everyone in her community already moving on with their lives. On a near daily basis, she puts herself in harms way, behaving under the (potentially deluded) belief that she'll be able to handle herself if the worse comes to worst. Often this includes changing her physical appearance to take advantage of the idiocy of male strangers. Her parents watch her destructive behavior and wish they could help. To top it all off, the lead actress has enviable hair styles and a badass fashion sense in literally every scene.

What I'm trying to say is...if you liked this movie and haven't binged Veronica Mars yet, what are you waiting for?
