I, Tonya

I, Tonya ★★★★

I haven’t seen it in years, but the movie it recalled for me was Van Sant’s To Die For. Effective and entertaining in its use of irony, but also deeply empathetic to its subject. Robbie hilarious, moving and brilliant. Great performances across the board (with a special shout out to Paul Walter Haydee’s Shawn Eckhardt), but credit to director Gillespie for establishing and managing to sustain a really tricky tone.

If I have a criticism, it would be the excitable camera, editing and scoring scheme - especially in the first half of the film. It was all a little too much, but the movie was so emotionally grounded that the things that weren’t working were easy to ignore.
