I'm a big dumb baby who bought the wrong region-coded DVD, goo goo ga ga, so I had to watch it online instead. Shocker alert, it doesn't hold up. Hated the bootleg fake Sakamoto score, hated that terrible day-for-night blue thing Miike does. hair goals tho

I used to work at a certain animation studio named after a certain bird whose offices are right around the corner from that laundromat & donut shop plaza. Those two guys who Sin-Dee snaps at as they walk by are Mac Kerman and Ben Kalina. My literal coworkers at the time of this filming.

And she just screams at them. I don't even think they're credited. Amazing.

update: took a screenshot and passed it along to another old coworker who confirmed…

This entire movie makes my eyes feel extremely good. And TC is super h*t in it too, what even is the deal...

Not too twee for me. The writing and voice performances in this are so enjoyable and therapeutic, I just loved it.

Extremely strong character study featuring an equally strong Mike Francesca cameo. Please be aware that this film suffers from chronic Lakeith Stanfield underuse.

    The Happiness of the Katakuris

The idea of a song that's three generations of Japanese men arguing over who gets to take responsibility for a serious crime is so funny and I would have loved to see it executed with a little more finesse than it actually was.

I laughed out loud a lot watching this but I also definitely felt those big lulls where the gags just weren't hitting. It was also a bit overstuffed; the several ideas at play, as well as the filmmaking style shifts, were noticeably worked on with inconsistent amounts of thought (...and sometimes, production value.) That's really unfortunate. Hausu this is not.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

My feelings towards TRoS and its predecessors can be summed up in this exchange between Jack and Liz from what is easily my favorite episode of 30 Rock (Dealbreakers Talk Show No. 0001):

    "You got a haircut...?"
"Actually, I got three haircuts. The first two made me look nuts!"

You know that thing where your roommate gets too wasted every weekend and pukes all over the bouncer at the club and you keep having to apologize for her but still go out with her all the time because she doesn't have any other friends?

Someone up there really didn't want Werner Herzog to make this movie.
