The Florida Project

The Florida Project ★★★★½

In 2015 I went to Orlando for the first time and as I was watching this film I thought back to the day that we drove to Disney. I probably drove past motels exactly like the Magic Castle and Futureland, housing families just like Moonee’s and her friends’. But I was oblivious to all that. For me, this film showed me that there’s not always a clear division between the poor and the rich. Poverty/homelessness exists in areas that may seem affluent and well-off, such as on the very margins of Disneyland. I read somewhere someone identified it as “hidden homelessness”. Baker managed to make a film about this issue that wasn’t condescending or exploitative, but empathetic and respectful. It’s grounded in realism, and he focuses on the people and how they push forward through their daily struggles.

I’m so glad I finally got around to watching this, I loved every second of it :’))) This movie is like an invite from Moonee to be a part of her life for a moment; to follow along on all her adventures through her pastel-coloured world and share in her joys and fantasies. So beautiful and genuine, definitely going to be rewatching asap 💕🦄🦄🦄💜
