everyone in this movie is so great but this movie in and of itself is not great it is just okay.
i liked this much better the second time around, although i am still extremely frustrated by the use of footage from Lime Kiln Club Field Day. it’s so ineffectual and overly didactic. the contemporary footage alone inherently (and quite nicely) brings up these questions around blackness and representation that the archival blackface footage here just throws directly in your face. for a film with so much subtlety, this choice remains puzzling to me.
