These characters are never going to let you know them completely; there's a withholding and a refusal to fit into the types they might seem at first to represent. It's a movie that offers some sort of resistance at nearly every turn, the same way the characters in the movie resist the scripts they try to give each other.
These are all good things, and are for me what made it special and accomplished. I can see how they'd be frustrations for a different type of viewer.
