Stephanie’s review published on Letterboxd:
LISTED IN: 2018 in film, ranked
i can't remember the last time i've anticipated a film so much. this is how it happened: on an otherwise-uninspiring day in september, 2017, i opened letterboxd. the poster was on my homepage. as someone who mostly learns of films through this site (welcome to rural queensland: if your movie ain't got a fart joke, we ain't talking about it), i had to learn more.
the synopsis told me nothing; i was halfway through the first review when a chill ran up my spine and, in the tiniest voice, i heard a 'no.' i knew that i needed to see this film, and i needed to see it blind.
and i did—every fibre of my being went into avoiding this film. i didn't read the cast list (something that, as actor trash, is usually the first thing i do), or any reviews, to know what to expect. i didn't search for trailers. i didn't ask my overseas friends their opinions, or whether they think i might like it. if i saw a promotional photo or screenshot or even the words 'lady' and 'bird' in succession, i closed the tab.
god forbid i spoil myself. i'd never forgive myself, if i did.
today, finally, was the day. on february 15, 2018, lady bird hit australian cinemas. the earliest showing was at 10:15am and i was the only person under the age of seventy who cared to be there.
in the end, this film was worth waiting five months for.
