Blistering and emotionally stunning. The depth of expression blew me away. I'm speechless...
A French sex comedy that delivers on the sex but not the comedy. It does however contain cat fights, group banana fellatio and naked psychedelic writhing. This makes it sound more exciting than it is. The English dub is quite tasteless and keeps things campy. "Clockwork Banana" is at least better than the absolutely excruciating "A Clockwork Blue."

I began watching this yesterday believing it was the Czech adaptation from 1976. After I tracked the Czech version down and watched it, I returned to this rather loose Russian adaptation (also from 1976.) The early underwater shots of mermaids are fantastic, but this is even farther from the Hans Christian Anderson story than the Disney version was (besides the ending.) The little mermaid is almost a third party here, which focuses instead on a peasant who heroically sacrifices himself…
While not good in the classic sense, 5 Dead on the Crimson Canvas is very entertaining. It looks like it was filmed in another dimension. The dubbing has that odd, disembodied quality which reminds me of Manos: The Hands of Fate. There's bizarre gore, awkward nudity, and also some intentional comedy. I also appreciate that a beatnik name-drops the title in a spoken word poem, which is followed by a round of finger-snapping.
