Shooting this on 16mm was a fantastic choice. It gives the film a unique texture that can't be captured digitally. Those images of New York, the Sun tarot card, etc. are all much more impactful and creepy because it's shot on film. And it has an interesting contrast to the famous drone images of St. James Island that are featured in the film and the very online nature of the Epstein conspiracy in general.

This is so damn fun. At first I was disturbed by the light-hearted nature of the film's violence but once I knew what I was in for I had a great time. The kills are fun and there are some big laughs throughout.

Some of the dialogue is hilarious ("we're gonna be on Hannity like them jew-boys who got Nixon") but other times it can be a bit cringe. The dialogue is often just caricatures of the American culture war…

Love Kubrick but wasn't a fan of the music and editing choices tbh. It doesn't fit the tone or aesthetic of Kubrick's filmmaking at all. It probably feels especially ill-conceived because I watched this right after I watched Hands of Bresson.

Incredible animation, the close-ups of the old man paddling and fish cutting through the water are especially beautiful imo. I do wish it was a little longer so you could feel his struggle, his achievement, and his disappointment a little more intensely.

The only real negative is that the music was a bit overdramatic for my taste. But still the directness of the original story and the wonderful animation make this a great short film overall.

    Dragged Across Concrete

This movie actually dogwhistles the insane conspiracy theory that Jewish people (aka "globalists") run world finance. And not from the perspective of the characters, but from the perspective of the narrative, and therefore the perspective of Zahler. This movie's ideological point-of-view is shockingly far-right. Also, the women have no character beyond creating melodramatic and cliched backstories for the male leads. It also tries to justify police brutality by essentially presenting a straw man argument. Aside from those horrific things (and…

Cult Movie Challenge Week 2: Gothic Horror Week

*I watched the German-language version of the film.

I liked the second half of the film much more than the first half. Some bits are quite stagey and unconvincing, especially towards the beginning, but overall I thought the film was pretty creepy, particularly in the second half when it becomes a bit more surreal and even has a bit of Herzog's weird comedic tone at times. I think Isabelle Adjani's character is…
