Currently 41 years fun. Getting a little better every day. Thanks for asking.
Carnival of Souls 1962
Gorgeous black and white photography and a trippy, dreamlike quality. There are so many striking images and beautifully composed shots. The organ music is weird and off putting. The whole thing truly feels like a nightmare. It’s perfect.
A Creepshow Animated Special 2020
I wish they had gone with a different animation style. The stories were pretty cool. The second story teetered on annoying at times, but it turned out to be my favourite of the two. It’s definitely worth your 45 minutes.
White Zombie 1932
Sure it’s a little racist, but Bela Lugosi is incredible here as the Zombie Master. His hand acting was next level. There were some very fun pioneer era camera tricks and special effects. The evil glowing eyes superimposed over the action looked awesome. We don’t get the super sweet ending they foreshadowed, but what we do get is still surprisingly violent for the time.
When our protagonist indicated that he would rather his wife be dead than alive and in the hands of the natives I audibly gasped.
This film has a special place in my heart. It was a sleepover favourite from my elementary school days. It is so much fun. It looks incredible and has so much going on visually. The theme music is boss. Geretta Geretta who plays Rosemary, the girl who’s face is cut by the mask, once commented on an Instagram post of mine. So I’m basically a Hollywood insider now.
The action in this film builds and builds until eventually our hero…
