    Pig

    ★★★★

"I'm sorry, boys... that pig had some powerful friends."

Never underestimate a man's love for his pet.

I think the sentimentality is laid on a bit too thick at a couple of points but otherwise, this is an engaging and thoughtful drama. Nice to know the art of the 90-minute film isn't entirely lost.

Don't go in expecting what you're expecting.

    "That'll do, Cage. That'll do."

    Millennium Actress

    ★★★★½

Kon knew how to make the mundane magic, and here he turns a simple premise into something wholly captivating. Millenium Actress is a dream-like journey of meta-madness, wherein a woman's life is conveyed through a genre-bending narrative that parallels the very films she stars in; homage is charmingly paid to the world of cinema, and the viewers' senses are regularly assaulted in the best way possible. It is a tragi-romance, a drama, a thriller, an action movie; lightly seasoned with…

I didn't know that horror noir could be a thing, let alone a thing that could retain its identity with a metal soundtrack.

    One can still be surprised.

I'm trying not to overthink Lynch, even though I'm the type of person to overthink everything. While watching, I couldn't help but take what I've garnered from his former films while shuffling through theories, and now I'm at the end, I feel like I have such a vague grasp on what I…

    The Howling: Reborn

"My whole life I felt like I never really fit in..."

    Oh, jeez...

So here I am at the end!

This could possibly be considered the best Howling sequel... at least in terms of technical execution. It has the highest production value (relative) and it comes across as the most competent in terms of direction, script, acting, yada yada... but what does that really mean in this franchise? One in which virtually every film retcons the previous and seeks to…

    Watched with Tom!! 🚀.

I really liked Parasite, but it's not a great film; I completely understand the hype, but I feel that its popularity is based on a mixture of Bong having successfully built up a reputation over the years, breaking into the western scene most recently, having the right distributors attached and ultimately presenting people with a film that is original and surprising.

However, original + surprising does not necessarily a good film make.

    I think I would…

    Knives Out

    ★★★★

If Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi is an example of how not to "subvert" expectations, then Knives Out can be considered the antithesis.

A modern take on the traditional murder-mystery format, while maintaining the feel and atmosphere of a bygone era; Knives Out is much like a period piece, and when in the confines of the house (our main setting) is quite easy to forget as being set in modern day. While it pays homage to a number of well…
