Oh my Oh my Oh my.
Now THIS is a damn Godzilla movie!!!
It’s a DEFINITE homage to the early Godzilla films out of Japan.
It’s super cheap effects and lots of no-name Japanese actors politely barking orders at each other trying to figure out how to stop Godzilla from stomping through Tokyo.
It’s MORE about the bureaucracy of the Japanese than it is about the wrecking of Tokyo. Super cheesy and fun as hell.
The only real gripe I had was that the first incarnations of Godzilla (yes, he evolves as the film goes on) look utterly horrible. Like a sock puppet with button eyes sewn on. That bad. I guess it serves as a slight homage to the early Godzilla films in that manner, but it’s really, really, REALLY bad monster making.
However, it does redeem itself when Godzilla starts standing upright and shooting lasers from his mouth, tail and back blades. Now THAT was cool as hell!!!
It’s a fun monster film that harkens back to a very joyful time of cheap filmmaking.
