    A Cure for Wellness

Gore Verbinski is a visual stylist of the highest order; if only his storytelling was of the same caliber. There's a great tale lurking within the unwieldy 149 minutes; or at least a lean, pulpy one. But ambition should always be recognized, and A Cure For Wellness marinates in a beautifully rendered weirdness.

    Alien: Covenant

Covenant takes everything that worked in Prometheus (okay the one thing, David), and drops it into a more conventional environment. Part slasher, part Dr. Moreau, Covenant is just weird enough to hold my interest. But I can't help but feel that Ridley Scott is trying to cram in so much info that could ultimately dilute the streamlined power of his original when it finally bumps up against it. It's a convoluted mess, but I think it works just enough to recommend a viewing.

Don't be scared off by the subtitles - read something for a change, ya bum. And you're going to have to read; even though this gorgeously shot slasher has a lot of moving parts in its pictures, all the twists (and there are many) are in the dialogue, and believe me you'll want to follow along with every engaging turn.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The anachronistic tone can't be a surprise the second time around, so Gunn has to double down on the other qualities that made the first film unique in the Marvel Universe; namely the off kilter humour and the heart. Most sequels go bigger; Guardians 2 goes deeper. Even better than the first.
