Suspiria ★★★

Works really well when it goes for horror, falls on its face when it goes for anything else. I think the film tries for too much; Fanning is pretty awful in this, and I don't care about any of the characters. The first hour or so just doesn't do much to get me into it. But. I still really like this movie because it sells the horror so well. The set pieces, nightmares, and gore are all great and it nails each sequence in that vein. The style is really unique, and dear god is the final mesmerizing. Love the use of music and gore throughout, so the bulk of this comes out positive, despite my reservations. I like this movie a lot, I just wish it cut down the attempts at drama and character and focused on horror more because what it has outside the realm of horror is pretty weightless.
