Lucas had a good visual sense even before Star Wars. I just wish Lucas weren't embarrassed by it.

Paul Newman is so effortlessly cool here. Just drinking whiskeys and pool hustling while babysitting the cocky newcomer and his girlfriend.
Tom Cruise's performance feels like himself amped to 11. He laughs before every line, he (literally) does karate when his ball lands in the pocket, he's out of control. Could also be a Danny McBride character.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio just chilling along for the ride.

It's honestly worth it to see this in the theaters to be able to hear the audience's collective cringing from Mikey Saber's scummy behavior.
Definitely this year's Uncut Gems in that the Academy will snub Simon Rex. Hope I'm wrong, because Rex is superb in this (and to think he only had 3 days to prepare). His character is so laughably narcissistic and awful, you're kinda left wondering what else possibly could've happened to him leading to the beginning of the movie.
The whole ensemble was great as well. Baker really has a knack for casting.
