Undeniably pretty entertaining but this has maybe one of the most insufferable casts of characters I have seen in any movie, Daniel Craig aside. It’s not even that they’re just annoying to me, they’re not well written either. Very surface level character outlines throughout when given this plot they could have been a lot more complex, layered, and emotional. Thankfully Craig is able to carry this movie pretty easily with some help from Janelle Monáe, and Rian Johnson has such a deep understanding of this genre and its conventions that he’s able to flip the genre on its head and still have it all lead to a generally satisfying outcome. A huge step down from the first one but still solid. Maybe making this one “bigger” and “flashier” than its predecessor wasn’t the move.
