The only comment on the YouTube video for this was “David loves factories so much!” with a whole bunch of heart emojis. Thought that was pretty sweet.

In Chaplin’s early classics, his character is a foolish but kind tramp who works desperately to gain wealth and/or love, always eventually gaining one or both but never neither. Here, that character is not reversed but essentially ripped inside out. Now he’s an intelligent but cruel gentleman who works desperately to gain wealth by exploiting an idea others have of love that he doesn’t share. Of the Bergmans I’ve seen this is the one I’ve connected to the most, found the most emotion and meaningful, and I think it’s also one of the strongest formally. I found this less fun than I expected and more stressful and unpleasant… which I guess makes sense for the genre but it isn’t what I was looking forward to. That said it’s still well-made for the kind of movie that it is, I liked the story and the performances and the camerawork. Good at balancing the emotion and drama with the goofier and crazy elements,  very effectively gross. I knew the basics of the end but there was a…

I mostly liked the look and creatures but this is boring, way too long, and pretty poorly written and performed. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it as a kid, I don’t know. Not sure if the surprise T&A or the goofy little robot animal sidekick for kids felt more out of place.
