Autumn Sonata 1978
Of the Bergmans I’ve seen this is the one I’ve connected to the most, found the most emotion and meaningful, and I think it’s also one of the strongest formally. So it’s definitely my favorite of his, and also somewhere up there when it comes to the best movies of all time. Liv Ullman in this… that’s what acting’s all about.

Cries and Whispers 1972
Very well-made, cool colors, took me a bit but I got pretty invested in the characters and story, liked the end a lot. I almost wish it were longer, I get that it’s going for a fragmented dream-like feel but it could’ve built up the emotions and characters more with a longer runtime… but who am I to tell Ingmar Bergman what to do?

I mostly liked the look and creatures but this is boring, way too long, and pretty poorly written and performed. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it as a kid, I don’t know. Not sure if the surprise T&A or the goofy little robot animal sidekick for kids felt more out of place.
