The only comment on the YouTube video for this was “David loves factories so much!” with a whole bunch of heart emojis. Thought that was pretty sweet.

In Chaplin’s early classics, his character is a foolish but kind tramp who works desperately to gain wealth and/or love, always eventually gaining one or both but never neither. Here, that character is not reversed but essentially ripped inside out. Now he’s an intelligent but cruel gentleman who works desperately to gain wealth by exploiting an idea others have of love that he doesn’t share. The Great Dictator, arguably his most grandly idealistic work by the end, where the tramp…

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with a biopic disrespecting its subject or a film being cruel to its characters but I also think that goes both ways and there’s nothing wrong with me saying Andrew Dominik is a hack and probably an idiot. The whole thing is as obvious, silly, poorly-written, stupid, and devoid…

Moment-to-moment reasonably entertaining and at times pretty fun or interesting or suspenseful (particularly in Chapters One and Four), but I don’t exactly get the point of Fincher’s rigorous technical precision if this is the quality of middle brow, cliched script he’s going to choose. Kind of a bad cast too besides Fassbender and Tilda? Or at least an okay cast saddled with unconvincing dialogue. Good fight scene, liked the end and final needle drop. Should’ve had more narration (not sarcasm).
