Thinking about all the alternative choices the Safdie’s had to KG in this movie and here’s how I think it would have gone.

A’mare Stoudamire: It’s probably 20% worse, but it’s also at least 50% more Jewish which is a worthy trade off.

Kobe Bryant: The only alternative where it’s maybe more intense, but it’s also way less funny. Probably overall way too miserable without the comedy. Holds a much different cultural footprint given what happened less than a month…

I know comparing almost anything to this is futile, but man it really makes every single thriller released the past decade look like garbage (even the good ones).

Probably 10th (?) viewing, but not seen in a couple of years.

I know everyone has an opinion on Nolan these days, but if you make a movie this good then you should get free reign to make whatever you want for the rest of your life.

This has continued to grow in stature in the months since I first saw it. Feels increasingly like the urtext on modern celebrity myth making. Specifically on how their personas are so delicately crafted, and how easily that house of cards collapses. A modern world, haunted by the old one. Analog on the floor and ghosts behind you. A titanic work.

Certainly enjoyed it more than Drive My Car, but it suffers from the Peitite Maman problem where it feels like a short story stretched into a feature. In this case, it feels like 3 edited together into one movie. Doesn’t flow as well as it should have, or needs to, for this structure to work. I think Hamaguchi is a talent, I just think his writerly sensibilities overshadow his skills as a director. For me at least, his movies don’t seem to have the emotional potency that they do for everyone else.

Hyams has all the tools needed for this sort of thing. I just wish this was better lit or was shown in theaters, because on streaming this is almost impossible to watch. It’s really stupid and the resolution is moronic, but hey I’m excited to see what he does next.
