    The Farewell

    ★★★★

Unbelievably well-written and funny. Deeply felt in every moment but never just one thing: we see how a situation of grief and devastation can also hold space for humor and absurdity.

Though we never really leave Billi, it feels like I also stepped into every character’s experience at some point in the story. I love the moments when words cannot express the truth people feel, but it finds ways to exist in the silent spaces, like the scenes with the…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A masterpiece. The second time seeing this I noticed the power in the moments just after Jimmie and Mont find out they would lose the house - Jimmie continues painting the windowsills, Mont continues writing his play. The idea that we continue fighting and being who we are in spite of everything. That our stories will still be told in spite of everything.

It took me a few minutes to really connect with this but once that happened WOW...never wanted it to end. The choreography communicates something dreamlike and deeply felt while also being able to show tension, rigidity, and conformity. The movement so beautifully embodies the feeling of being seen and known and the ways we find ourselves in moments of connection and wandering.

Essential. This broke me in so many ways - while a difficult watch, a necessary one. Also one of the most well made series I have ever seen.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco

    ★★★★½

You don’t get to hate it unless you love it.

Truly one of the most beautiful and deeply moving things I’ve seen this year. Last Black Man in San Francisco shows a transcendent and almost spiritual devotion to its city - a carpenter and a playwright at the center of the story, caring for a house with its plants and stained glass windows and organ sounds, holy. A holding space for memories and family and time, a stake in the…

  • The New Romantic

    The New Romantic

    ★★½

Watched because the title reminded me of New Romantics from 1989! Visually this was enjoyable to watch and I loved the soundtrack. I appreciated the risks taken here and the idea that we can own our stories with all of our mistakes and imperfections and not feel that we need to hide the things that helped us to grow. There were some confusing mixed messages along the way but overall a fun watch!
I was feeling all these feelings and then the last scene happened and WOW this was so worth watching just for the last 5 minutes!!

    It’s you, MCMUFFIN!!

Booksmart was sold out so we watched Superbad and it was so cool to see all the parallels! A relic of the early 2000s! Endlessly quotable! Protect Evan at all costs!

    Here’s what we know:
    1) This gets better with every watch
    2) Each scene is better than the last
    3) Somehow the pool scene alone manages to paint a perfect picture of the magic and terror of adolescence and all the emotions of growing up??
    4) The only way to perform Shakespeare is in the park - ing lot of Whole Foods just like in Barthelona

    Late Night

    ★★★½

Such a fun watch and amazing writing by Mindy Kaling! While the storyline was pretty basic, the edgier jokes and dialogue kept the movie feeling interesting and really funny. I love how Mindy’s character was so unafraid to take up space and I think that speaks to Mindy’s voice as an artist as well. Emma Thompson is brilliant in every scene! And a Maggie Rogers song at the climax of the movie, what more could you ask for?

Maybe signs are real?? Maybe soulmates exist??

But also, maybe men can have emotions too?
