“how’s it feel to have a wacko for a son?”
“it feels wonderful.”
this is truly one of the most masterfully written films i have ever seen and i can’t believe it took me this long to watch it (you’ll probably have to get used to me saying that whenever i log a popular filmé/cult classic because there’s a lot that i unfortunately haven’t seen yet)
entrancing, eerie, effective — donnie darko is a complex, multi-layered film that explores many interesting and thought-provoking themes, such as mental illness, time travel and teenage rebellion. it’s the type of film that can’t be categorised into one specific genre and i think jake put it best when he described it as a “psychological journey of adolescence.”
jake gyllenhaal is SUCH an insanely talented and versatile actor. i’ve only seen a few of his films so far but his performances always manage to blow me away and i can already tell that this was one of his best. i love him. what a man. also young jake is an absolute dreamboat.
i will definitely be reading more into this film and rewatching it in the future. 🐰
