You’re now a religious expert? You used to vomit from drink at grandma’s house. Now you preach?

Having been impressed by her Quo vadis, Aida? (2020), I’m now exploring other works of Jasmila Žbanić, a talented director and writer from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I have to say that I wasn’t prepared (well, not that one can or should be, really) how deeply I would be moved by On the Path and its underlying message.

Being out-and-out secular humanist myself, I found this to be such…

    Near genius (imho) !

A stellar Scandinavian A-list cast and a movie that had me at hello.

It’s somewhat hard to describe, I can only drop some of my personal associations that crossed my mind: Touch Me Not (2018), Dogville (2003), I’m Not There (2008)Daisy Diamond (2007), Festen (1998) and a Dogme 95 ethos, sort of... all that as an experiment exploring gender, sexuality, our alter egos - our three identities: who we truly are, who we would like to be and…

    Triangle of Sadness

A moment of sadness… for I believe that year 2022 has, it’d appear, failed to deliver that “blew my socks off” 5-star cinematic experience which every other year has - Ruben Östlund’s newest movie was in my virtual shortlist of potentially taking the crown but it just wasn’t meant to happen.

Had high hopes for this - totally loved his 2 previous movies and this one also triumphed at the Cannes in July, bagging the Palme d'Or, and also winning…

    The Banshees of Inisherin

    ★★★½

It’d appear, thinking back, that every year there’s (at least) one movie in my cinematic “bubble” that attracts great festival reviews, creates intrigue, generating an award season buzz, my Letterboxd buddies start giving it high marks yet with me trying to keep it at arm’s length - refusing to watch trailers (which I don’t do anyway), read or watch in-depth reviews etc.

The Banshees of Inisherin happened to be that movie for me in 2022.

Additionally, seeing Martin McDonagh having teamed…

    The Match Factory Girl

I'd prefer a girl, but if you want a boy, I'll want one, too. For a girl, you can buy such pretty clothes and boys are always interested in rough games like ice hockey.

    Kaurismäki, Kaurismäki…my friend.

Is it just me but sometimes it does feel as if all of his movies I’ve seen are now this one big ginormous Kaurismäki movie in my head, a single movie of his cinematic Universe, rather than individual movies and stories?

    Also, I…

    A Dog's Will

What a load of crap. I could barely handle 15 minutes of it.

Might go back and finish it, though. In 2030 perhaps, once I've made a considerable dent in my Watchlist and there is only American Pie left to watch.

Clearly, propped up (in terms of Letterboxd, where it's #20 and IMDB ratings) by fake accounts, even though it has apparently won some local (in native Brazil) awards.

    Stay away.
