Before Midnight

One of those movies where each subsequent revisit conjures up a whole new list of reasons to cherish it. Location plays a huge hand in the irony - a perfect, upper-class existence shattered by the fragility of relationships and the unhurried inevitability of death. "I fucked up my whole life because of the way you sing." isn't merely harsh; it's poignant because it might very well be true. Jesse can't have all those moments back and neither can Celine, who fights to keep her agency as an attribute and not as a burden, but do they really want to erase it all? The final scene suggests otherwise - capturing the form in which couples cling to the other simply because they're a reminder of that transitory flow - "passing through" and attempting to make sense of it. Going, going, gone.
