Jojo Rabbit ★★½

About as middle of the road as you can get with something like this. I'm a fan of Taika Waititi's work, but his comedy is toothless and silly, often like what would go viral on YouTube or in the form of an SNL short, and it doesn't translate to the material. Jojo Rabbit attempts to find multi-faceted emotion within its inhuman setting, and yet, the great comedic films about Nazism have already proven, time and time again, to steer clear of broad parody in favor of far greater complexity, of which this fails entirely. Still, it has its moments, and Waititi's style is so charming, which is both its strongest attribute and ultimate undoing. Watch Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be instead.
