Son of Godzilla isn't misguided because of the titular baby kaiju, but for how unnecessarily mean it is toward him. Not just our villainous giant insects & his own dad constantly abuse the poor little guy. Even when Godzilla tries to save him, the film treats Minilla as a nuance over being a character like his dad more often than not. If you're gonna go kid friendly, don't do so bitterly.
