When people talk about the morality of horror movies, most discussions revolve around the so-called "Rules of Surviving a Horror Movie" as outlined in SCREAM and others. Mostly these rules are referencing the slasher flicks of the 70s and 80s, but I wish more was made of the horror morality established in EC Comics and carried on in films like this, CREEPSHOW, the TALES OF THE CRYPT tv series, and even the GOOSEBUMPS books. The Blair Witch Project

    ★★★★½

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT immediately became such a part of the zeitgeist, a meme basically, that it's easy to forget how revolutionary and terrifying it was. There have been several ill-conceived sequels, countless parodies, and an entire genre of imitators, but it still terrifies.

    Curse of the Blair Witch

    ★★★

This 30-minute faux documentary was aired prior to the opening of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT as part of the revolutionary guerilla marketing that included a website that treated the film as real, and Missing posters for the filmmakers plastered across college campuses.
The doc works well as both a cultural artifact, channels popular investigative series of the time like UNSOLVED MYSTERIES or HARD COPY, as well as expanding the universe and giving further credence to the movie.

It's amazing this movie is watchable, let alone enjoyable. It's really a breathtaking achievement.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

    ★½

As much as I disliked most of the plot, this movie’s real problem is its suffocating pace. BUT my kids loved it, and said it was their new favorite, so what do I know? I’m always glad to be in a theater when my kids are having a great time. My oldest is 12, and has grown up with Rey (and has a crush on Ben). She was in tears when it was over, partly because she loved it but also because it was over.
