The American President

The American President ★★★★

Scavenger Hunt [31/31]: A film you own but haven't seen yet.

“Do you think there will ever be a time when you can stand in a room with me and not think of me as the President?”

Of course it only took Aaron Sorkin to answer the question, “What would happen if we combined a romcom with a political drama?”. The answer is a delightful film that balances both touchy-feely goodness and serious political discourse. It’s uncanny how à propos some of the ideas discussed still are today— the film opens up with a discussion on gun violence. Reiner brought the perfect touch to an already pristine script (lest we forget his marvelous work on When Harry Met Sally). He adds effortless fluidity to what could easily have been a jarring montage of governmental imagery. The only bad reviews I’ve seen for this film call it “leftist propaganda”. That sounds like a perfect genre to me.
