It's brilliant how the crux of Burning lies on that one, seemingly throwaway, line and the beauty of it rests solely on the implication that events might have already happened. The movie makes no effort to offer any form of exposition - instead, it lets the audience come to the conclusion of it by themselves.
Although it can be a bit of a bore as the intrigue builds up, Burning still manages to be transfixing enough for the viewers to be fully immersed in the slow-burning story that it presents.
