If I was creative enough and resourced enough to make films I would want to make films like this. Poetic-political-realism dripping in a thoughtful and moral (but not moralistic) philosophy is my bag.
This is normally not my type of movie, but my ten year old and eight year old wanted to see this. So I spent a couple weeks watching all 26 episodes of the anime series, then getting to see my first subtitled, foreign film with my kids!!!
We had soooooooo much fun together.
I’ll never know if this is a good film or not because the incredible high feeling I have right now has very little to do with the film.
I believe that Zappa (this doc) is unique in a big way that has nothing to do with Zappa. It felt like an appetizer that fills you up. Like a summary with an arch. It touches spots and moves on without dramatizing them but you totally understand the complexities that are natural to any relationship. Not dramatizing everything out was ingenious because that would have made the doc a bit cliched. I became aware of this when they started talking…
