as with the rest of his movies, nolan presents us at the outset with a puzzle to be solved and then walks us through his process of setting up the pieces for the most elegant solution. sometimes that's all you need. i actually thought many of the setpieces here were better executed than those in TENET.

the combination of the latest '80s sfx excess with carpenter's deep love for the mechanics of classic film (particularly the western and screwball comedy) creates something quite different from other pulp throwbacks of the era. earnest and knowing at the same time, it's never afraid to go for the cheap laugh, but it also has a dignity that feels authentic rather than simply pinging our memory receptors for 40 years of cinematic archetypes.

positively pynchonian psychosexual farce of repression and submission – maybe has more in common with phantom thread than it would first seem. the dangers of leaving the garden: “if I had my way, this is the way i'd like to spend all my time, in the company of men like yourselves in the pursuit of knowledge.” for a film that treads in lightness, it's so dense with gags and ideas that it nearly buckles under its own weight at times. but then there are those scenes like the poker game with barbara stanwyck and charles coburn constantly one-upping the other that feel almost transcendent.

Big "small town comes together to put on the best damn talent show you've ever seen" energy, only the talent is killing off giant worms.
