While I think that The Conversation is a very good film, I feel a bit underwhelmed after watching it for the first time tonight. I know that the acclaim for this is great. I was prepared to give this a lower score until the last 15 minutes changed my mind. It was incredibly tense. I will say that Gene Hackman is very good here. I love him as Popeye Doyle. This performance is basically the polar opposite of his French Connection character. Maybe I will feel better about this one after a second viewing. I guess I was just expecting a masterpiece. And while it’s very good, it’s not at the masterpiece level for me quite yet.
