    Midsommar

I genuinely don’t feel like I’m capable of rating this until my 2nd watch, but I truly commend Midsommar for being one of the most visually ambitious horror films of the decade, to the point that it’s almost certain this will achieve a cult status in the future. My only real criticism is that the main character only exists to be subjected to truama; you grow indifferent toward her because she isn’t written to take initiative or agency over her…

Truly the most important detail about Paris is Burning is the sole fact that it managed to highlight the happiest moments in these queens’ lives at the height of the AIDS epidemic. You feel empathy through experiencing their pure sense of joy, rather than being exposed to exploitive footage. This is unequivocally one of the best representations of queer livelihood and it was done through examining poor youth of color finding beauty and fulfillment through community - not truama porn.

Both an absurd and genuinely intriguing re-watch. The practical effects are irresistibly vibrant and embark on an eccentric venture from science fiction to fantasy. Thematically, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie attempts to condemn the colonial exploitation of native peoples. It’s unfortunate that Mothra is obviously a product of its time, as almost all indigenous characters are portrayed by actors wearing dark paint, even when portraying its titular character as their heroine. Nonetheless, it’s pretty fascinating the great lengths that Toho had undergone to make this kaiju film stand out from both Gojira and Rodan - especially at an almost comical expense.

Genuinely the most masterfully-crafted choreography I’ve ever seen in any movie - period. It is simply unbelievable how this franchise manages to raise the stakes at a level that seems almost infinite. I wish blockbusters always felt this inventive and jaw-dropping.
