this sweet little country tale had so much potential but the lovely atmosphere was really let down by the underdeveloped dialogue, some off putting editing choices and bad acting from Xavier Samuel (but of course his career took off after this because he is a white man with a prominent jawline!)

Still worth a watch though to support what little Indigenous representation we have in Aussie dramas.

I think it could’ve given the Indigenous characters more of a central voice rather than them coming across as distant, weeping caricatures of pure loss and despair. but it shed light on such an important issue through impressive sound design and some lovely cinematography so overall I really appreciated this piece!

can’t believe this is the director’s first feature?? a really stunning slow burn, definitely going to keep an eye out for what Valadez does next.

what does everyone even do in the stands when the champions are competing in the tasks? like just stand around for an hour being like ooh I hope cedric’s not dead :/
imagine how much more exciting the tournament could be if they had wizard GoPros attached to the champions’ heads so they could actually see what the f is happening
