Avatar 2009

Theatrical Cut
Interconnected humanism. Arguably Cameron's strongest in regards to his immaculate blend of tech fetishes, romantic sweep, high-concept ideas, and classical structure/discipline. A big brain and brawn and heart collage, and just plain ravishing adventure. Cameron is a pro at basic, fundamental mechanics; fluid, gripping, efficient exposition, gradual succession of set-piece intensity, sturdy characterization, and mixes of genre. "It's just Pocahontas!", they say. Excuse me, but does your precious Pocahontas (ignoring the common knowledge and reliance on the…

I Lost My Body 2019
Call this a target audience problem. I don’t like people who define themselves primarily through loss. I don’t like pity being the primary feeling that you get off a person. I don’t like romantic stories where the male lead’s quality that he brings to the table is want.
The primary device employed to tell the narrative is the journey of a disembodied hand, echoing the various tribulations undergone by the protagonist as he gets kicked around by the world. That’s…

Spider-Man: No Way Home 2021
45
The first thirty minutes or so of No Way Home really had me fearing for the worst. So sick and tired of their droning exposition and catch-up first act methods. You'd think after being the dominant visual cultural property in the world, the MCU would figure out how to start a movie like this, but gosh, this 2nd '3rd' Spider-Man movie wants to throw us right into the mix while still spending plenty of time running in place, and…

Night Is Short, Walk on Girl 2017
Replicates that feeling of late-night hangouts (responsibly) binging booze or other mood-alterers with your friends in the city without much of a plan. Head on in to that used bookstore that only sells political manifestos and erotica, take a peek at that pop-up theater that only plays on the second saturday of each month, have a drink with that weird old guy who always comes and goes by his lonesome. Why? The better question is, why not? Night Is Short,…

Sonny Boy 2021
Pure abstract storytelling at its finest. Been watching this as it aired during the past couple of months and loved each episode, even though I probably understood like 50% of what was going on. Normally I would find its convoluted structure annoying or pretentious but it sucked me in quick with its beautiful art style, sparse sound design, and an incredibly interesting whirlpool of symbols and metaphors. Once I fully realized this was not something looking for answers, I quit…
