Elvis ★★★½

There's not much here that really makes this long TV movie stand out as a John Carpenter film, but DAMN if Kurt Russell doesn't really channel Elvis. It was quite the transformative performance and I'm very happy to have seen it.

The music is lip-synced and sometimes works pretty well, but honestly, the tunes are so great that it's hard to get too upset about this. The rest of the performances are average to above average, but it's really Russell that is the reason to watch this. Well, and to learn a bit about Presley's life. To be honest, I went into this not knowing much. I know there have been a number of movies about the King and I'm always wondering what they got right and wrong in these biopics, but my guess is they got a good portion right and I had a great time with this one. Like I said, it's very different for a Carpenter film and I'm not really sure how it ended up becoming a part of his oeuvre but I'm glad it did.
