The moving image is dope and I prefer things with pretty colors and abstract storytelling. Narrative is a thing to be subverted.

964 Pinocchio 1991
Pure madness from start to finish. Usually films with this kind of frenetic energy sort of sputter out towards the end but 964 Pinocchio maintains the energy up until the surreal ending and the oblique post-credit sequence. What a strange film. Definitely more of an experiential film than a narrative based one, and although it's clear that Tetsuo is a major touchstone and influence I think it has a unique vibe that justifies its existence. I'd definitely recommend this to people who enjoy non-narrative experimental films. Not for people who want a clear, cohesive plot and a neat ending.

Song to Song 2017
Malick detractors are a dime a dozen, and the common criticisms often fall within the same broad strokes. The first mistake is that of the false dichotomy, that there has to be "meaning" to parse from a film. And that dislike for his films results from an inability to extract meaning from them.
Films aren't mathematical equations with clearly defined solutions.
Why are detractors so uncomfortable with not being able to understand a film? They insist that they understood it…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015
Lazy filmmaking with some fancy corporate branding. Pretty much a complete waste of money all across the board.
