Steve Robinson’s review published on Letterboxd:
I wanted to like this more than I did at the cinema. I have read all the reviews about letting the past go and bringing something new and I wanted to embrace all of it but after 2 and a half hours of sitting through it again, I cant. This film is still better than all the prequels, better than most space operas out there but not better than the original trilogy or the force awakens. I wanted it to be, I wanted to see the new era that fans talked of with this movie but I didnt see it.
There were some lovely touches that I missed in the cinema and Luke is in a place I never thought he would be. But that doesnt make it a bad film. It is well written and the visuals and performances were good. So what was it?
I am supposed to be good with words but all I can say is that I came away feeling like it wasnt "star warsy enough". I'm not a purist. I'm not holding onto the past. I want star wars to move forward. It just didnt hit the right notes for me. But anyway, that is that and that is all I have.
