Hearing that classic Ifukube Godzilla theme in the IMAX… holy shit.

    The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

    ★★

Probably overall a better watch than the first one, but it's such an obvious and pointless retread for the first two+ hours, and then only really kicks into life in the last ten minutes to set up the next film in the series, so feels like even more of a waste of everyone's time.

As my diary will attest, I've been finding it quite hard to get in the head space for watching movies in the last few weeks. Just the idea of concentrating on one thing for 90 mins+ at a time feels largely beyond me, and even when we've been in the mood to do that, finding something with the right tone that isn't going to be in some way triggering has often turned out to be too challenging, so I just…

  • The Exorcist: Believer

    The Exorcist: Believer

All the worse for how close I was to going with this for the first 45 minutes or so. Went in with my expectations at rock bottom, after a pretty uniquely shitty week, so Believer had everything stacked against it, and it still somehow almost kinda won me round with an intriguing set up.

And then… man alive. If it’s not quite the absolute train wreck that Green’s Halloween Ends was, it’s only because Believer is so fucking boring that…

Maybe a weird thing to say about what is clearly one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time but: this was just a surprisingly fun way to spend an afternoon. There can’t be many 3.5 hour films you finish wanting to rewatch again real soon, but I think the fact that at least half of Seven Samurai is basically a hangout movie makes it really engaging on a purely vibes-based character level. I wanna spend more time just kicking it with my cool samurai bros.

My favourite Mifune performance so far.

    The Cameraman

    ★★★★½

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Keaton gives us a monkey shooting a Gatling gun.

Sherlock Jr is the best showcase for Buster’s talents, and in The General he single-handedly invents action movies, but here it feels for the first time like he’s working out some of the grammar that becomes a part of the post-silent era. By far the most modern feeling of his features I’ve seen so far, feels absolutely ripe for a remake tbh.

  • Past Lives

    Past Lives

    ★★★

Fundamentally didn't buy the film's conceit, and so struggled to invest anything into the central relationship. The most interesting parts to me were all around Nora and Arthur, after spending seven years settling into a groove, now having to navigate the re-emergence of this person from Nora's past and grappling with a new dynamic to their relationship. Those moments felt real, and had an emotional weight that just didn't attach itself to Nora's relationship with Hae Sung, which always felt like Song was reaching for some cosmic, mystical truth I was never going to believe in.
