The story and characters are all pretty standard for a Sci-fi film but the visuals and world building add so much to make this an engaging watch. It’s genuinely incredible that a film could look this good while being a third of the budget of most films of this scale. There really has never been a better example of how much money is wasted on massive crews and massive visual effects budgets and studios when this film managed to look better by having a small crew and just shooting on location.
This doesn’t really feel like the Saw franchise in both a good way and a bad way. It is definitely the best made Saw film since the original by a mile. It looks like they actually spent money on it, the characters are better written, and the actors seem like they have done it before which is a good thing (mostly) I can see a lot of Saw fans not loving this film though because it’s better if that makes…
This film understands that old people are scary
The idea of flipping the genre trope of sex gets you killed is really interesting and is executed really well. To me the slasher element just came into the film a bit too late and the payoff felt rushed. I would probably be more forgiving of that because of the smart commentary on genre if It Follows hadn’t of a very similar thing much better back in 2014.
