tick, tick...BOOM! ★★★½

The Sunday brunch scene was like Avengers: Endgame portals scene for theater kids

This was a lot of fun! Andrew Garfield was amazing in this, it’s so clear right from the beginning he’s studied footage of Larson down to ticks looks and head movements and it was hard to not get lost in his performance right from that first glimpse of him on screen. I really thought this was a beautiful and inspirational story and all the music is great, my only gripe comes with Lin Manuel-Miranda’s direction feeling a bit inconsistent. There’s a handful of flashy & fun musical sequences - the first half has quick snappy direction to it and that just seems to go away the deeper into the story it gets. I wish it had that maintained the same style all the way through. I think it’s very purposefully rough around the edges in it’s pacing and structure. Overall great directorial debut by Lin, I’m excited to see what he comes up with next, but my favorite musical this year is still In the Heights.
