Chloe Zhao innocent!
The stuff the works feels like Zhao, but she can't quite push through the MCU template. Still, demi-gods arguing about humanity's value and defying god will always work for me, even if the Deviant stuff is a mess.
Tries to have its cake and eat it too, crossing over the line of "A24 atmospheric horror" and "Blumhouse spectacle horror", but doing neither particularly well. Not sure if the point of this thing is an exploration of abuse or a statement on climate change, and I'm not sure the filmmakers know either. When it transitions into the 3rd act, the only thing it has going for it is decent creature design. Imagine if IT COMES AT NIGHT ended with the final set piece from 2018's HALLOWEEN.
Beautifully acted and composed, but as empty as the husk of Frank Weaver.
At one point, they play a Run the Jewels song, so I guess that was alright.
