    Gets much better in the second half when Wheatley is allowed to lean into dreary, ghostly and conspiratorial sensibilities more but I think the main issue here is that the key components of the film, Rebecca's death and it's effect on DeWinter and the blossoming romance, don't really work. Mainly because Armie Hammer is totally miscast and misdirected, whenever he's not in focus the film improves dramatically.

    Simply written and sentimental as hell, has a great scale for both the large and intimate though. Mulligan is fantastic as always.

    I can only assume this would be even more hard-hitting for someone actually involved in Indian culture but from an outsiders perspective it's a well made, effective and most of all extremely empathetic depicition of class/caste discrimination. For sure one of the more thematically involving Indian films I've seen from recent years.
