My first Mizoguchi film, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Considering Japan's position on the world stage back in 1953, it's easy to see how this movie could be a critique of the country's post-WWII shift toward capitalism. We all want for a better life, but in the search for wealth, you may neglect the things you already possess. Becoming drunk on your own success may make you blind to your failures.

Really beautiful, really haunting, and really thought-provoking.
