    The Rental

A tense, slow-burn horror film. Directed by Dave Franco (in his directorial debut), two couples (Alison Brie & Dan Stevens, Sheila Vand & Jeremy Allen White) are at a rental house for a weekend getaway. The couples' compelling, complicated emotional dramas rival the horror, both dovetailing nicely. Great performances and direction, it's restrained when needed to great effect; we found this a fantastic film.

    Radioactive

Marjane Satrapi's Marie Curie biopic, starring Rosamund Pike, "works best when it embraces vivid surrealism." It features striking cinematography, unusual structuring with time jumps, and good performances, especially the chemistry between Marie and Pierre (Sam Riley), but it's an uneven film that too often veers into a formulaic biopic. Yet we enjoyed it overall.
