The kind of film you'll watch twice just to put yourself at ease.

A high concept film that is pulled off so subtly. I can only imagine the modern day equivalent from some terrible American director where both Veronique's meet and end up fighting to the death. There's something great about a film that leaves a LOT left unsaid and this is one of those rare films that does so beautifully. This is the first feature I've seen from Krystof Kieslowski and I must say I'm already a huge fan of his visual style. The intense lighting and color grading make the film feel like it's set in just a slightly different, bizzaro universe. The way the camera moves during scenes with motion or those point of view are so graceful.

I was skeptical of Irene Jacob's ability in the beginning, mostly because the singing was not the best dub, but she really starts to embody the two Veroniques. That ends up being the best part of the film, the inability to recognize the shift between the two similar yet slightly different characters. The chance encounters and relationship connections that pass through both arcs are fun to come upon and it really does make you want to watch the movie again immediately afterwards.

Don't ask or want to much. I didn't take time to watch the American Ending for the film and from what I've read I would advise you to do the same. It's a simple and moving film all on it's own. Both Veroniques make up a whole, weird place that feels like something that's never been done before.
