Easily the best film seen at this year’s BIFF so far. So sweet and so sincere, Celine invites us in to the mind of the child. I find that this representation resonates with something deep within. Something that is brought out relatively rarely which evokes a powerful reaction. It’s about seeing the exact thoughts that felt so novel and personal in childhood presented as if recalled.
It’s a little film presenting a little world, filled with large questions that are posed with a poetic simplicity. The quietude is utilized with generosity and patience, and contrasted with incredible effectiveness. Narratively, there might be some points of potential improvement but these ultimately feel unimportant as the film grows to become more about feelings than ideas. Petite maman comes with the warmest recommendations.
