Annette ★★★★½

Expressive filmmaking at its finest! Leos Carax has somehow destroyed the movie musical even more thoroughly than Bob Fosse did with All That Jazz. And just like with Fosse’s 1979 tour-de-force, it’s by way of an honest to God masterpiece. Wears its emotions on its sleeves while also confidently inviting ridicule. Weird in the best way possible. A simultaneous critique of the veneer of performance, a gorgeously melodramatic romance and a farcical… fable? Coming of age story? Idk honestly words fail me, and trying to explain this movie is counterintuitive. Now please excuse me—
