Butterfly Kisses

Butterfly Kisses ★★½

BUTTERFLY KISSES seemed overly impressed with its smarts, spinning three different layers of cinema with their own relation to reality. It's not exactly news that both documentary and fiction filmmakers can be manipulative jerks, and bringing THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT co-director Eduardo Sanchez in for a small tole as himself just emphasizes that film's relative subtlety with similar themes. But BUTTERFLY KISSES finally starts taking itself seriously as a horror film in the last half hour, with a sense that genre was the most marketable way for it to get meta. It's torn between being a drama about a filmmaker wrecking his life and a supernatural creepypasta - those choices make more commercial than artistic sense.
