Stephanie K.’s review published on Letterboxd:
Sunset Boulevard was such a fantastic film noir! It stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, a calloused Hollywood screenwriter who has become defeated after a series of unsuccessful ideas. By chance he meets Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) who plays a fallen silent movie star whom has lost touch with the Hollywood world (and reality). Norma convinces Joe to help her enhance the screenplay she wrote. Although Joe thinks the screenplay is horrible, he agrees to stay with Norma and fix the writing so she can have the comeback she’s looking for (or the Return as Norma would put it).The audience knows this relationship will turn out badly because the opening scene shows Joe Gillis dead in a swimming pool. He then tells the story of what happened and how he ended up dead in the swimming pool he’s always wanted. His narration of events and what he sees is written so poetically; it was such a pleasure to listen to and a pleasure to watch.
